I got some blood tests done, but they barely covered anything at all.

At first, it can be a bit of a puzzle figuring out how this all operates, but after three years of being self-employed and using Sidecar, I finally got the hang of it. The key is to reach out beforehand and ask the place you’re visiting to inform you about the self-pay rate and its CPT code. They often seem puzzled when you inquire about the CPT code since it’s self-pay, and I usually explain that it’s self-pay from a health savings account (HSA), which only approves transactions if the invoice includes the CPT code. Once I started using this approach to gather information from providers, I stopped facing questions about my CPT code inquiries.

Honestly, some services that Sidecar covers are reimbursed at a much lower rate than their actual costs (I’ve noticed this mostly with labs, MRIs, and CT scans), but if you’re diligent about calling around and finding reasonably priced places, it tends to balance out in the end.

I shell out about $225 a month, and I feel way more in control of my health plan compared to traditional insurance, where I’d get hit with bills that I had no input on.

In summary, it definitely works, but it requires you to put in the effort to call ahead and do a lot of research before choosing a provider... Plus, you’ve got to be patient since providers often don’t hand over CPT codes immediately.

The company messed up my birthdate, and I was informed that I’d need to completely cancel my insurance and re-enroll since changing my birthdate wasn’t an option. They also mentioned I could get a refund, but that never happened. I ended up canceling my daughter's insurance within 24 hours of being charged, and they told me they couldn’t refund me, even though it was the start of the coverage month. I didn’t even get to use their services at all. If you care about your money, I’d steer clear of them.

They said they’d check into the refund for the birthdate issue, but I haven’t heard a peep since. No accountability whatsoever.

Once I sent in all my documents, they kept saying they required my medical records, even though I had already uploaded them. They used this as a reason to delay my claim. Total scam artists. Hope you have better luck getting paid on any claims.
